Dr Chalmers Path to Pro - Let them Pray
This reflection looks at James 5:13 and how it reminds us to turn to God in both good and difficult times. It’s a simple reminder that prayer and gratitude can help us stay grounded and handle our emotions with faith and perspective.
It also touches on how practicing gratitude can shift the way we see things, helping us notice the good around us and build a more positive outlook on life.
Dr. Matt Chalmers [00:00:04] All right, so I want to go through James 5:13. It’s, if anyone among you is in trouble, let them pray. If anyone is happy, let him praise. It’s kind of a short little John about, it’s the entry into how powerful prayer is and how important it is, but it’s also looked at as a... Way of dealing with emotion. One, recognizing the emotion, and then two, you know, giving you good plans on what to do with it. The idea that when we’re happy, we should take that to God, and when we are troubled, we take that to the God as well. The purpose of prayer and the way that it focuses us and guides us in what we’re trying to do. The reason that this one’s interesting is this is part of a daily Bible study my seventh graders are doing. My seventh grader and his friends are doing, which is interesting because nobody told them to do this. I didn’t even know they were doing this until they’d been doing it for about a month. So that’s pretty cool. But this is a great one to keep in mind, especially as, you know, it’s easy to talk about prayer whenever things are bad because you’re asking for things to get back. But it’s also nice to recognize that if we stop and count our blessings, it’s a great way to form gratitude.
Dr. Matt Chalmers [00:01:39] One of the big things about gratitude is that we can actually shift the way that we view the world by recognizing the things that are good in our life. The more times that we recognize that, the more our mind starts looking for those things. And the more it looks for those things, the most it finds those things. So you can literally use this type of training or technique or however you want to do it, look at it, is a way to literally alter the way that you present and you see the world. So it is a really interesting thing to take a look at from this long ago, the psychology that we’ve come to use, like we use a lot in LLP to literally change the way that they let people have them fly. So it’s a really kind of interesting old piece. I just thought it was fun because this goes along with the whole Bible study that they send out every morning that the kids do. So it was pretty cool. But I just though it was really neat and I wanted to share this piece with you because this little part, you know, again it kind of goes into how the Bible is deeper than we give it sometimes credit for. But this is the thing. Finding the positives when things are down and recognizing the positives when things were good. Will and can change the way that you view the world. And by changing the way you view the world, it changes the way that you perceive everything around you.
Dr. Matt Chalmers [00:03:07] So if you’ve heard of gratitude, this is kind of a nod to that type of idea. If you haven’t, you really want to look into gratitude because it’s one of those things that literally changes your life if you choose to do it properly. But yeah, I just thought that was cool. So I wanted to toss that one out. If you guys have any other questions or anything, here’s some questions at chalmerswellness.com. We’ll talk to you. Have a great day.
